Sri - Your Virtual Personal Assistant on the Iphone

Sri is a software for the Iphone that has been acquired by Apple recently and helps you get things done on the go. It makes using the phone easy and the non techies would love it.

Suppose there is a restaurant that you know where you want to book a table for two.

  1. All you need to do is press the green button and dictate "I want a table for two at LL Farino tomorrow at 9:30 PM.
  2. Once you have confirmed the text Sri would look for the required service that would allow it to make the bookings.
  3. In this case it is "open table" and see if the table is available or not and if it is available it will book the table after you confirm by clicking on the confirm button. 
  4. Done!

Sri is a piece of technology that is really smart engine which can do tasks for you on your voice command. This is a great example of integration of speech recognition. Speech Recognition has not been used by developers as much I had expected. While there have been softwares like Dragon Naturally speaking and Vlingo for phones the market is fairly untapped. The company that takes this technology to the consumers and makes it easy to use for them would take the lead. I'm waiting for for software like Sri to become a commonly used software across the mainstream.

The acquisition of Sri by Apple will definitely benefit the industry and the company. Hopefully under Apple the software would grow into a full blown platform and application which can be used on multiple devices.
